WEEKLY POST

WEEK 1:                                          MAY 25
Artist: "Mark Rober" & "See The Way I See Studio Vlogs"

  • Mark Rober is an American YouTuber, engineer, and inventor and is well known for his YouTube videos on popular science gadgets with nearly 23 millions active subscribers. He only makes 12 videos a year, and the reason for that is because each video takes one month to create. His videos consist of Jello the size of swimming pools, harmless glitter bombs for porch thieves, giant cannons that launch T-shirts into stadiums, environmental clean up projects, etc. The goal of his videos are to create family friendly projects to entertain his viewers, while also benefiting the environment or society. I believe that having this kind of approach ethical approach makes him a credible source and even prior to this he worked for NASA as a rocket engineer. Since then, he has left NASA to pursue creating content for his millions of subscribers. I have been watching his video's for years and I would highly recommend giving him a watch!

  • "See The Way I See Studio Vlogs" is a much smaller youtuber with only 8.8k subscribers. Her content consist mainly of vlogs throughout her day and work life. She seems to enjoy arts and crafts and is a small business woman who's main focus is to make aesthetically pleasing clothing articles and scale her brand name! She only has made about 10 or so videos across the past few months, however, her growth has been rather big considering she is nearly at 10k subscribers with so little videos. All of her videos seem to be self edited and she has rather good skills! There is a great level of authenticity to her content and you can see that she enjoys what she is doing and that is what I love to see in smaller creators.

  • If we compare the two channels we can clearly see that Mark's level of experience is much grater considering this has been his life's work, were as, for the smaller creator she has a less skillful approach. However, both youtuber's are doing what they love and to be that is what matters most. If I were to start a youtube channel, I would definitly relate to the Studio Vloger, in the sense that she is just a small person trying to get her name out there. I myself have even began to create day in the life tik tok's for a period of time doing the "75 Hard" challenge! During this time I was very happy to be creating and filming. I would run through my daily routines, meals, workouts, etc. This of course fell off, however, I would love to get back into it and start creating more content!

WEEK 2:                                           JUN 4
Artist – Leite & Donovan

Juliana-Cerqueira-Leite.png

Juliana Cerqueira Leite

ignant-art-tara-donovan-01-1440x1440.jpg

Tara Donovan

Juliana Cerqueira Leite is an American / Brazilian sculptor based in New York City, who bases her art on the abilities and constraints of the human body. Using her body as one of her primary tools, she will climb, scratch, dig, push, etc. through her materials to create a very organic piece of art. Much of her material consist of plaster, clay, and latex which can all be molded into her sculptures. Leite's explains that the reason for the use of this material is that, "One of the reasons I use so much density of material is that I want to upset the status quo- the idea that matter is consistency subservient to our desires. I want to put myself in a position where matter is in just as much in control as I am."

Tara Donovan is an American sculptor who lives in New York City and is famous for her large scale sculptures, drawings, and prints utilizing everyday objects to express her form of art. She is very well known for her commitment to process and generate unique perceptual phenomena. Her work can be considered extremely creative, abstract and dramatic. The piece you see above is untitled and was created in 2018 and is currently held at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Denver. She mentions, "I don't think inspiration just comes from the sky. I think you have to sit down and you have to work. Sometimes it's really hard, and sometimes things come easier, but really you have to show up, you have to get to work, and you have to have determination."

My Take:

After doing some research on the two artist and looking at their different pieces, I was able to find some similarities and differences. Some of the similarities within their art consist of sculpting, large scalability, uniqueness, and being abstract. Differences could perhaps be the choice of material and the approach to their art itself. Leite explores the theme of human experience, where as, Donovan focuses on the properties of objects and expresses her art as such. Each of their pieces give the viewer the chance to look, take a step back and say "wow". Personally my favorite of the two is Donovan's art due to the sheer size of her work & complexity needed to create her art. If I were to start sculpting I would definitely take a more Donovan inspired approach and try to recreate some of here pieces! The goal would be to create art that is both large in size, as well as, beautiful and complex in appearance!

WEEK 2:                                           JUN 4
Art Activity #2 – Sculpture

This week's plaster casting activity was an absolute blast! Going to the beach is one of my favorite things to do in and of itself, however, adding cool projects like this make the trip that much more fun! This week we did what was called "Plaster Casting" which essentially is creating a mold of whatever object you choose. During this project I was able to successfully create an exact mold of my right hand and was surprised to see the end result! I hope you all enjoy the mini video of the entire process!

WEEK 3:                                           JUN11
Week 3 – Artists OTW – Anthony Ricciardi & Philip Colbert

Gallery-Frame.jpg

Anthony Ricciardi

Anthony Ricciardi isn’t a typical artsy type. The colourblind financial analyst who quit his job to become an artist went to university in Alabama on a baseball scholarship and spent more than three years working as an analyst for an investment fund. It wasn't until he was offered to do a Mural in New York City, when he realized the opportunity of a life time was in the palm of his hand . So he quit his job the next day to be able to attend and show his work. His style consist of using comic book clippings and vintage articles from magazines to create his pieces and having the central theme of wealth, creativity and hip hop.

Philip Colbert

Philip Colbert is a British Pop-Culture artist who's works consist of paintings, sculptures, clothing, furniture, and design. His central theme revolves around pop art and finance. Finance plays a role in his work due to the implementation of current trends; some of which are the Crypto & Stock Market uprising as a result of the global pandemic. Hunt Triptych is the name of the piece above and as illustrated the viewer is able to see the combination of both pop-culture & finance.

WEEK 3:                                           JUN11

dave-pollot-paintings-11.jpg

For my potential art piece I plan on creating something very similar to Anthony Ricciardi & Philip Colbert in the sense that one of the major themes amongst both artists is pop culture. Pop culture art to me is something that has always caught my eye and the eye of many others alike. For my idea I planned on creating a 2ft x 4 ft canvas with the essential goal of including designer brand logos, vintage aesthetic, & making sure the viewer can see the beauty in every day objects. Some of the materials I would use to create more texture would probably be oil paints and comic book papers for a more rustic look to the piece. Most of my inspiration would probably come from Anthony Ricciardi's work, as well as, artist from pinterest who have similar kinds of art. I believe that a project like this would take a new-be like me upwards of 2-3 weeks of hard dedication! It is hard to decide when i will believe my piece is complete because a lot of artist will always want to keep adjusting and "fixing" things that don't necessarily need to be fixed. In my case I believe that I will be "finished" when I "feel" the piece is complete after taking a step back and looking at it. I am unsure if art in an of itself can help to enhance or empower my major (Finance), however, I believe that letting people experience their creative flow will allow them to see things differently and perhaps improve their over all effectiveness in daily work all around.

This week's project was very interesting and fun! What I was going for was showing my audience what I did over the weekend, how I got sick, and my recovery process. I believe that this was a very successful zine because I was able to demonstrate that exact sequence of events within my drawings. I started with the trip itself and transitioned into the setting which we would soon find out is Las Vegas! Here my friends and I went clubbing, eating, dancing, etc. and had a great time over all. Eventually with all good things, we had to head back home in LA and thats what I felt the symptoms of a flu. Eventually I ended up with a 103º fever and was sick for a week. Thankfully now my recovery is approaching the end. If I were to do something differently I, would maybe make my zine longer to add more detail of my Vegas trip!

WEEK 4:                                           JUN18
Week 4 – Artists OTW – Tom Sachs & Johanna Fateman

Screen Shot 2022-06-24 at 10.33.11 PM.png

Tom Sachs

Tom Sachs is a sculptor and best known for his recreations of modern icons. This piece show cases Tom Sachs' Space Program lunar harvest collection. This piece was interesting because it demonstrated samples collected a the Tom Sachs Space Program lunar landing site at Gagosian Gallery in 2007 . Inside this zine was a documents of index's, moon rock analysis, worksheets, geological analysis, space expedition tools, clothing, etc. It was interesting to see how Tom Sanchs portrays his work through the recreation of his icons.

Screen Shot 2022-06-24 at 10.32.21 PM.png

Johanna Fateman

Johanna Fateman began her 1997 fanzine, Artaud-Mania, by professing, “Dear Diary, I am writing to you because confessional writing is the self-effacing form most suited to the abject position of the fan.” She at the age of 22 had said that much of her earlier zine did not really have that "solipsistic feel" that was associated with many of the era's pieces. Solipsistic meaning the view or theory that the self is all that can be known or exist. I believe much of her work consist of trying to express her self and find the deeper meaning and/or purpose in her life.

WEEK 5:                                           JUN26
Week 5 – Artists OTW – Lady Pink & Keith Haring

Lady Pink

Lady Pink is a graffiti artist originating from Ambato, Ecuador and later residing in New York City where much of her career would take off. She focused her path on using graffiti and murals as acts of rebellion and self expression to empower herself and women across the globe. Much of her art is very colorful and has the central theme of expressing abstract forms of art with unique shapes and twists from reality. Her difference between street art and gallery art is that her art is not sold in a museum. Her art is freelanced and done publicly on walls and giant flat structures for massive portraits. Her strengths consists of brightening up public areas, being able to show self expression, and raises her publicity due to spreading art around the city. If i had to choose one of the other I would definitely pick graffiti art any day. I have always been a

Takashi Murakami is a Japanese contemporary artist who's work in fine arts media such as painting, sculpting, fashion, merchandise, and animation. He is known for blurring the line between high and low arts by portraying his unique artistic style. He believes in western trends and has recently taken off in his career and gone viral for may of his fashion art pieces. He has has collaborations with brands such as Louis Vuitton and worked with fashion designers like Issey Miyake and Marc Jacobs. He has also appeared on the cover artwork for rappers such as Kanye west and Kid Cudi. His strengths are that he gets to work in a huge networking environment with high value clients, brands, designers, etc. His ability to grow his brand name is his greatest strength.

If I had to choose one of the other I would definitely pick graffiti art any day. I have always been a  fan of graffiti art and I have the up most respect for the work that they do because there are many artist who do not get enough recognition to build their brand. I love all aspects of art and I enjoy both graffiti and gallery art pieces, however, I lean more towards public self expression!

WEEK 5:                                           JUN27
Week 5 – Artists OTW – Graffiti Painting

I had such a fun time doing this piece considering as a child I would doodle box letters a lot and found graffiti art are very interesting. Unfortunately I am not the most skilled in actual graffiti spray painting, however, if you give me a pen and paper ill try my best to do with what I got. Here i decided to go with standard box letters and use 5 different colors to blend with one another!

WEEK 6:                                           JULY3
Week 6 – Artists – Camille & Sarah Elgart

Camille

Camille is a French singer who began her music career in 2002 and signed with Virgin Records. I recently listened to: [Camille - MANDALALÀ - 12 - "ON DONNE DE LA LUMIÈRE ET ON RECUPÈRE L'EAU"] and I thought it was a very interesting experience. This song and video began with a large group of dancers in a circle moving with the rhythm of the A Cappella whiles there were deep notes sung slowly getting louder as Camille began to sing. Through out the entire song Camille and her group slowly got lounder and louder to fill the flow and the song until the peak of the song where they all sang the loudest and everyone joined in on the dancing, all to slowly relax and bring the song back to end right where it all started.

Sarah Elgart

Sarah Elgart is a choreographer who specializes in large scale production for her dance films. All of her work is live and I recently watched: Grand Performances presents Sarah Elgart (COLA 2021 Feature Presentation). Which is a film directed by Elgart to express a surreal form of interpretive dance art. Watching this gave me the chills as it is some what similar to that of Camille's work. In the sense that it begins slow and quiet and exponentially grows into this loud, intense, musical feeling. Throughout the film I noticed that my emotions were everywhere and I was even freaked out a bit because the music was nerve wrecking. Other then that I would consider both artist's work's rather similar, although they are two completely different genres of art.

WEEK 6:                                           JULY3
Week 6 – Artists Activity – Drawing II

Campus Map & Automatic Drawing

- After doing the cognitive map activity I noticed that what I remembered was where I was going for my college classes. As a Finance Major, for the last two years of my college career I spend a majority of my time in the lower part of campus near the Pyramid Structure is the COB building AKA: College of Business. It was here that I developed the skills and knowledge I use in the outside corporate world! However, with all this learning and I found myself not being able to remember what the rest of campus looked like. I compared the two maps only to find out that I was missing nearly 70% of the campus haha.

- The Automatic Drawing was an extremely fun, interesting, and emotional experience all together. Prior to beginning the project I picked colors that all worked together and I set them aside to use as I go along. I then decided to play the song Anchor by Novo Amor and let my body do all the work, let loose, and just feel the music. I made sure to keep my eyes completely shut during the experiment and I would occasionally switch colors as I moved with the song, or use them all at once. Non the less I was extremely happy with the results that came out!

WEEK 7:                                         JULY10
Week 7 – Art Activity – Headshots & Environmental Portraits

Graduation Day!!

WEEK 7:                                          JULY10
Week 7 – Artist – Nan Goldin & Annie Leibovitz

Nan Goldin

Annie Leibovitz

Nan Goldin is an American photographer and activist who mostly explores LGBT cultures, intimacy, and the opioid epidemic. Much of her work has this sort of vintage look to it, in which case you can also see that she captures very natural moments with little to no instruction prior to the photo. It takes me back to this sort of 90's or 80's style of photography and I have always loved this sort of style. My favorite photo of this collection is the one in the top middle of the two ladies looking directly into the camera. You can see and feel the emotion captures by the two ladies and their style truly expresses and represents the LGBT look Goldin looks for.

Annie Leibovitz is an American portrait photographer best known for her engaging portraits of celebrities, which often feature subjects in intimate settings and poses. Here we are able to see professional Leibovitz work is and how she is able to capture very beautiful and intimate moments. She uses lighting to help brighten her pictures and can be described as "manufactured photography" which is different from Goldin's style of work. My favorite photo of this collection is the bottom left photo of the woman in the white dress in the icy cold mountains. Here she looks so elegant, beautiful, and natural and I cant help but think this is a picture from a movie scene.

WEEK 8:                                         JULY17
Week 8 – Art Activity – Photo Story

- Day in the Life -

This the story of my Daily Routine throughout my college career! I decided to make a positive change in my life and begin focusing on myself and hone in on my mental and physical well being. I have always had a creative mind and enjoyed the concept of "Day in the life" videos, so what better way to better myself than to try and do the same! This day in particular was filmed on a day when I had no classes and a free schedule.

To sum it up rather quickly my day consisted of the following in order:

  • Waking up

  • Cleaning my room

  • Brushing my teeth

  • Cooking Breakfast

  • Checking the market for trades

  • Walking my dog

  • Working out

  • Cooking dinner

  • Getting ready for the evening

  • Sleeping for the next day

I absolutely loved making the content and I hope that you can see the story I am trying to portray through the art of photography.

WEEK 8:                                          JULY17
Week 8 – Artist – Addario-Cardiff-Miller

Addario

Addario is an American photojournalist. Her work often focuses on conflicts and human rights issues, especially the role of women in traditional societies. In this photo you can clearly see that Addario is in the middle east and shows her personality. That even in times of danger she is committed to spreading her vision and ideals to the media. Although Addario and Cardiff-Miller's work's are different, they do share the central theme of "capturing the moment". If I had to choose between one or the other I would definitely pick photography instead of working with sounds because although I appreciate the work that these artist do, it is far too advanced for me to re-create.

Cardiff-Miller

Canadian artists Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller live and work in Grindrod, British Columbia. They are known for their works of creating immersive experiences that draw the audience in through their visual and sound aspects of art. This piece above is called "The Killing Machine" which is described as tattooing prisoners with their sentences. In reality it is just a scary contraption that plays a unique musical symphony that starts rather quiet and works its way up gradually getting more and more intense. It creates this sort of story with the musical symphony and takes you on this wild ride of emotion which i truly enjoyed.

WEEK 9:                                          JULY24
Week 9 – Art Activity – Time-Series Photography

RULES: Take a photo every time you see something aesthetically pleasing through out the entire day!!

During this Photography Time Series, I decided to take a picture every time I saw something "aesthetically pleasing" and the results were exactly as I imagined if not better! This week's project lined up perfectly with my San Diego trip and we did plenty of activities which were perfect for this project! I made avocado toast for breakfast, fed my beautiful dog, bought makeup for my amazing girlfriend, ate Korean Corndogs, had Matcha Ice cream for dessert, made flowers, checked into our hotel in San Diego, ate lunch at a beautiful restaurant and have a few drinks, went to Birch Aquarium for our main activity, had a smoothie to cool off, saw BLXST for his first concert tour, and ended the night with Boba and Mexican food all together!

I feel like if I had a team of 5 people to generate ideas for a marketing scenario I would probably instruct each person to have a different task and complete a task every hour for 6 hours. For example, one person would work with products, one for services, one for promotion, one for places, and one for people. Each hours these people would have to figure out a way to complete a task within their field to help scale our team business.

WEEK 9:                                          JULY24
Week 9 – Artist – Eric Singer & Ewa Xebra

Eric Singer

LEMUR: League of Electronic Musical Urban Robots is a group of artists and technologists who create robotic musical instruments. Founded in 2000 by Eric Singer, LEMUR creates exotic, sculptural musical instruments which integrate robotic technology. Eric Singer combines both his love of engineering and music to create his machines and musical robots which are extremely interesting. His robots are similar to pianos in the sense that musical notes are played when strung, however, the sounds are a lot different considering Singer has to use electronic synths in comparison to a regular sounding piano. If I were to make a musical robot I would engineer one that plays the guitar somehow with me, so that we could play live music together.

Ewa Xebra

Ewa Xebra's is completely different from Eric Singer in the sense that her work revolves around photography and his work revolves around music. I absolutely loved Luna's 365 day photography project, which was a picture everyday of Xebra's daughter. It was so cute to see little Luna's life transpire and grow throughout the different seasons of the year! My favorite of course has to be the Christmas time pieces. If I were to take a photo onc ea day for 10 years it would probably be a portrait of myself so that I can visualize how I age through out time both physically and emotionally.

WEEK 10:                                         JULY30
Week 10 – Art Activity – Intermedia

For my 3 Media choices I decided to go with AI Technology, paint and photography. In this particular example above I went with an AI Generated scenario of what "Climate Change" might be in the AI's mind. I decided to go with 3 AI generated images and i was surprised to see that it was fairly accurate, with each image having its 1 of 1 unique style.

Had I chosen the other two forms I believe that it would have been more focused on things that cause climate change or perhaps capturing the image of smog emissions on a canvas / photo to demonstrate climate change.

I am more than satisfied with the Ai generated images considering each photo generated is the first and last time it will ever be created. Each photo is a 1 of 1 piece and it demonstrated what climate change is perfectly.

WEEK 10:                                         JULY30
Week 10 – Art Activity – Intermedia

Joseph DeLappe’s

  1. Joseph DeLappe has always worked in new media through which he expresses a distaste for power politics, stating that when he got engaged in political art it defined his purpose. He merged on-line gaming, performance art and sculpting to create his work and express himself. I would have never thought of gaming as a form of "art media", however, now that I think of it there are millions of ways to express yourself and this is one of the ways. DeLappe's work and Hebron's work have similarities in the sense that they both sculpt, however, their general message is different all around. In terms of media they both use social media to publicize themselves to the general public. Perhaps a form of media that DeLappee can use is painting to describe his work!

Micol Hebron’s

  1. Micol Hebron is an American interdisciplinary artist, curator, and associate professor. Hebron launched Gallery Tally, which is a collaborative art project in which people around the world were tracking women's representation in art galleries and creating posters for exhibition. She uses sculpting, painting, clay, and social media to express her work. As previously mentioned both Hebron and DeLappe both use social media an sculpting to represent themselves and the work that they do. I believe that Hebron could implement more photography into her work.

WEEK 11:                                          Aug 5
Week 11 – Art Activity – Timed Painting

This week I decided to do a "timed painting" session with my group of friends. The way it would work is every person involved would have a blank canvas with all paint in the middle to be shared. Once everything is set up, a 5 minute timer would be set in place and every person would have that amount of time to paint whatever it is that they wanted. After the 5 min timer is up, all participants must stop completely and rotate their canvas one fo the right. You can not explain to the person what it was you were trying to paint and it is up to the person who has your painting now to decide what to do next and put their artistic twist. This will continue for several rounds until you end up with your original canvas and see what unfolded through out the time.

WEEK 11:                                          Aug 5
Week 11 – Art Activity – Lohmuller Gyuri & Andy Warhol

Lohmuller Gyuri

Gyuri Lohmuller is a self-taught artist who has exhibited his work in Austria, Germany, France and Hungary. His surrealistic paintings, he says, reflect his deepest emotions. In the painting above you can se how his work clearly illustrates surrealism due to its sheer complexity and twist from reality. Illustrated above is a dessert canyon where the ocean seems to be on a giant chess board. Right in the center is what looks like a chrome sphere, however, there does seems to be a globe or illustration of earth in the middle of it all. This could also be seen as an eye in staring back at the viewer.

Andy Warhol

Moonwalk celebrates the historic Moon landing of July 1969, when Apollo 11 commander Neil Armstrong and ‘Buzz’ Aldrin became the first human beings to step on another world. Warhol decided in this painting to places Aldrin next to the American Flag for added effect. His colourful print conjures a sense of lost euphoria and glamour and nostalgia. I absolutely love the blue and red theme Warhol went with and it truly is a beautiful piece indeed.

WEEK 12:                                         Aug 12
Week 12 – Public Art

For our final week we were instructed to do some form of "public art". My version of public art was doing a chalk drawing of the one and only Patrick Star himself! That's right, Mr. Star has surfaced from bikini bottom so watch out world! This has been such an amazing project to do and I truly enjoyed everything about drawing with chalk. It has been many years since I have drawn on my driveway, however, I am happy with the results none the less. My mom thought it was funny and my neighbors enjoyed walling past Patrick Star smiling. This was a wonderful way to end off  the semester and I have had the best time exploring my creative side!

WEEK 12:                                         Aug 12
Week 12 – Artist – Abramovic - Althamer

Abramovic

Abramovic is a conceptual and performance artist who's works explore body art, feminist art, relationship between the performer and audience, and more. She refers herself as the "grandmother of performance art" and pioneered the notion of identity by bringing in participation of observers.

Althamer

Althamer is a contemporary polish sculptor, performer, collaborative artist, and video artist. The artist is best known for groundbreaking projects involving community engagement, collaboration, and social transformation. They often incorporate sculpture and ultimately seek to reorient how art is made and displayed.

Thank you for a Wonderful Semester!
